LAGOS-Yaba College of Technology 35th Convocation ceremony was held yesterday at the Philip Adegbile sports complex of the Institution, as a total of 7717 graduands were presented and awarded with various certificates on National diploma (ND) and Higher National diploma (HND). This was according to the Rector, Engr. (Dr) Ibraheem Abdul in his address, stating that a Total of Seven thousand, seven hundred and seventeen students (7,717) Graduated from the College this year with one thousand, eight hundred and ninety three (1,893) students graduating in the Upper credit, while 3,940 students in lower credit and one thousand, six hundred and thirty graduated in pass grades.

‘This 35th convocation ceremony is for the graduates of 2021/2022 Academic session which includes the part-time and full-time students of that Session. The 35th Convocation being held today November 23, 2023 is a landmark occasion for me as a Rector, Yaba College of Technology. It is the first Convocation Ceremony to mark the beginning of my tenure of five years, therefore, it is the first time I am privileged to address this audience as Rector.”

Dr. Abdul used the medium to unveil his 5- year ERECT agenda, giving a run down of barely 6-month achievements, as the 7th Rector of the 76 years Institution.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Education in his address, Prof. Tahir Mamman, SAN,OON, represented by the Director of legal services, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Ezonebi Blessings Azorbo congratulated the graduands and urged them to be productive and resourceful while pursing other meaningful ventures in life. On education, the Minister stated that, the government is aware of various challenges confronting the system, even as the government 4- year strategic plan of addressing them with the sole aim of development is not in doubt.
He stated however that the educational shortcomings, which include, accessibility, equity, funding, teacher capacity building and vocational education are being addressed.
In another vein, the Minister hailed the three distinguished Nigerians who were conferred with honorary fellowship award by the College for contributing largely in the development of education and by extension, the Nation, which included, Lady Christine ‘Doja Otedola, mother to the Nigerian billionaire, Femi Otedola, Prof. Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State, who was represented by Prof. Usman Tar, and Alhaji Hassan Adebayo Sunmonu. The Minister reiterated their commitment and charged them to continue to join hands with Government to reposition education:
‘Today ,we honour distinguished individuals with the conferment of fellowship award, recognizing their exception contributions to our nation. Congratulations to these exemplary figures, who served as role models for future generations. I invite them to join hands with the government in furthering the development of this institution and leaving an indelible mark on the institute and the national”:
Other highlights of the ceremony was awards were given to students who came out overall best in their department and level but National diploma and Higher National diploma.
