LAGOS–A Non Governmental Organisation (NGO), JAKIN, has joined others across the world to mark the International Literacy day during the week, as a way to broaden and encourage child right education in Nigeria.
According to NGO Founder/President, Mrs. Olubukola Adebiyi, who said that this year’s ceremony is the 14th edition, Dress a Child for School Project, for one thousand orphans and vulnerable children, even as she attests that with the vision and effort of the NGO, committed sponsors like Mariteam limited, Gameville foundation, Purple Maryland limited, others, including representatives from office of the permanent secretary, Lagos state ministry of education, Tutor General Education District 4, Mainland Local government Education Authority Secretary, Christian Association of Nigeria, Mainland Local government Parent Teachers Association and Iwaya Community leaders among others have all reiterated their commitment.
Mrs. Adebiyi noted further, the importance of literacy: “What we are doing is tied to life, even as humanitarian services is by the grace of God”.
Speaking on child education, she said, “child education means giving children the opportunity to be educated, and access to their right, because education is every child’s right. It has to do with supporting children to acquire good education with enrolment into school”.
Highlights of the occasion include recitation, drama and fashion parade, including distribution of school bags, books, and other stationeries.

It could be recall that in 1966, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO), on their 14th ordinary session declared the International Literacy Day- a way to raise awareness on the importance of literacy and to highlight the progression made in global literacy efforts, including the shortcomings.. This facilitated the official celebration of ILD on September 8, 1967, which has continued to date. Meanwhile, Data from the Federal Ministry of Education as at September 2021, 38 percent of more than 200 million Nigerian citizens, representing over 76 million adults, who are not illiterates, while more than 133m, as illiterates, which is alarming and disturbing.
