Sadly, many young ladies, especially students of higher Institutions and others have been victims of ritual killings by their boyfriends or sexual benefactors, who lavished them with material things and all sorts of extravagant enjoyments.  How the society got to this level remains a puzzle.

In fact, most social critics have narrowed the blame down to family failures and the absent of core values couple with bad governance and high level of poverty in the land, wondering how  a country blessed with so many abundance of human and natural resource could be  multidimensionally poor.

This is even as report released last year by the World Bank, titled: Nigeria Poverty and Equity Brief:  October 2024 (English), where it based its analysis from the official household survey data from Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics, depicted that 30.9 percent of Nigerians lived below the international extreme poverty line of $2.15 per person per day (2017 PPP) in 2018-19 before the COVID-19 pandemic.

It therefore advises government on how to tackle poverty:  “Nigeria remains spatially unequal. The further expansion and strengthening of the social protection system will be key to help mitigate the impact of future shocks, allowing households to make necessary investments into human capital to avoid inter-generational transmission of poverty. This short-term intervention needs to be complemented by economic diversification that grows the non-oil sector and creates private sector jobs together with investments into public services, especially in health, education, and infrastructure. Improving the effectiveness and efficiency of public investments is especially important in the context of limited fiscal space.”

Since this report, what has changed, nothing, rather, poverty and crimes has geometrically increased, and the country’s young citizens bear the brunt.

January 12, 2025, would never be forgotten by the family of the slain Nigerian Youth Service Corps Member, Salome Adaidu. According to report and the confession made by the suspect, Timileyin Ajayi, a 32-year on Channels TV, had said, no regret of killing and dismembering the deceased- very inhumane act and this is one out of many killings for ritual purposes yet, lessons have not yet been learned by most ladies who go into odd relationship in the guise of affluence.

Some Chronicles

In 2017, 21-year-old Olayinka was killed by her boyfriend, Abdulkareem Yakubu, for ritual purposes in Kwara State. In 2018, a Delta State University student, Elozino Joshualia Ogege, a first class 300-level was murdered by four Yahoo-plus gang, Macaulay Desmond Oghenemaro, Ojokojo Robinson Obajero, Nwosisi Benedict Uche and Enaike Onoriode who during their confessionary statement narrated how they kill the late Elozino for ritual purposes .  Desmond who appeared remorseful regretted his actions but noted that Elozino’s murder was the fifth lives he had taken for ritual purposes, detailing however that the first four female victims were abducted at Oghara and killed for rituals, as Elozino’s killing was from the University community, Abraka. Before killing the girl, they removed her eyes, her breast and heart until she died in anguish.

Another unlucky victim was Joy Meye in 2018, a 27-year-old woman, murdered by her boyfriend, Tope Alade, for ritual purposes in Lagos State.

2019, a vampire, Gracious David-West, 39 years old met his waterloo when the Nigerian Police arrested him after he was tracked and arrested in an undisclosed hotel at Port Harcourt, Rivers State. According to him, he had killed seven women both in Lagos, Owerri and Port Harcourt. He was captured in a CCTV footage when leaving a Hotel in Port Harcourt after killing the lady he had slept with in the previous night at undisclosed hotel. According to his confession then, published in Vanguard, he said:

“So far, I’ve killed five girls in Port Harcourt; one in Owerri (Imo) and another in Lagos. I started the killing in Lagos. I took N52,000 from the bank account of the first girl I killed in Lagos. Thereafter, I went to Port Harcourt, then to Owerri and later returned to Port Harcourt. After I kill a girl, I collect her phone and sell the phone at Waterlines and MTN office (areas in Port Harcourt).

“I met the last girl (latest victim) at a club in Port Harcourt,” David-West told reporters.

“I take a girl into the hotel, we eat, make love and sleep. Later, I wake up in the middle of the night and put a kitchen knife on her neck, ordering her not to shout. “I threaten her that if she shouts that I will kill her. I promise her that if she cooperates that I will not kill her, so, the girl, out of fear will not shout.

“After the girl relaxes, then, I will tear the bed’s pillowcase and tie her hands and legs, so that she will not struggle. Thereafter, I strangle her,”

Same year, Favour Daley-Oladele was gruesomely killed and mutilated by her boyfriend, Owolabi Adeyemi at Ogun State, with the aid of a prophet, in an attempted ritual to acquire wealth.

In 2020, 20-year-old Sofiat Kehinde was killed by her boyfriend, Sadiq Owolabi, for ritual purposes in Oyo State.

In May 27, 2020,  a 22-year-old lady, identified as Uwaila Omozuwa, an 100-level Microbiology student of the University of Benin, Edo State, was beaten, raped and hit by a fire extinguisher by unknown Yahoo boys but later died at  the University Teaching Hospital. According to the report, she had gone to study at The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill, Benin, but met men of the underworld.

In 2021, precisely on Christmas night in Edo State, a 29-year-old teacher, Elohor Oniorosa, was reportedly murdered and dismembered by her boyfriend, David Osaretin, a truck driver, for suspected money ritual purposes. In a separate incident  a 21-year-old Mojisola Awesu, a graduate of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, was tricked into attending a party in Ilorin, only to be brutally murdered. She had been paid N15,000 for her attendance. Four men have been on trial since then for murder. In 2022, another 22-year-old lady. Jennifer Anthony, a 20-year-old woman, was also killed by her boyfriend, Gabriel Idibia, for ritual purposes in Benue State.

Same year, Andrew Ominnikoron, a Lagos BRT driver killed Oluwabamise Ayanwole, for suspected ritual purposes in Lagos State. The Rivers State Police Command arrested Kenneth Sylvanus, 24-year-old; Chibuzor Amadi, 33-year-old, and Chijioke Ogbonna, 37-year-old, for beheading a nine-year-old child.

On August 2024, Ogunnaike Philip, 29 years, was arrested by Ogun State Police Command for allegedly kidnapping, raping and robbing before killing his victims, Abigail, according to Sunday  Tribune, the serial killers said he has taken  lives. Narrating his first killings he said:

“It was Abigail. We met along a path. I presented myself as a seer and deceived her into believing that she had aura that would attract men. She asked what she would do and I told her that she would follow me into the bush to cut some leaves.

“Inside the bush, I held her neck tightly and told her to open her phone with her password. I threatened to kill her if she did not. She didn’t open it fully so I collected it from her and used rope to tie her hands. I killed her thereafter. Another of his victims were Mary. In his fourth killing, he has openly confessed that he met his victim in a vehicle.

“Very early in the morning, I went to board Ibadan-bound vehicle. I got down at Iwo Road and decided to flow with street boys there. When I didn’t find it easy, I made up my mind to return to Abeokuta. I saw a lady in the vehicle I boarded who was calling different men. I had wanted to get down at another point but when I saw her disembarking, I got down and spoke to her as if I had seen a vision concerning her.

“She accepted my words and said she needed money from men. She said she was a makeup artist and needed about N500,000 to buy some things. She said that she came to see one of her boyfriends. I told her to buy a sachet of water which I would touch with Ajé (object of fortune) I was moving about with. It was a deceit as I just bought that thing in the past with the thought that I would use it to con people.

“She followed me to a bush side. She plucked a leaf that I pointed to her, opened her phone and started mentioning names of men she had stored in there. Suddenly, I grabbed her neck but told her that I was not going to kill her. She was so afraid but I told her she was like me; that we were both criminals.

“I told her to sit down and she did. I sat beside her. I told her to remove her dress, after which I slept with her. She was calm after that, and I told her to unlock her phone. She removed the password and gave it to me. I told her to remove her dress again, collected it and left. However, I dropped it along the way. I didn’t want to kill again; I had intended to go somewhere to settle down and take care of myself. Their initial killings were as a result of anger when they didn’t unlock their phones quickly,” he said.

On September 5, 2024, Punch Newspaper reported that one Adeleye Ayomide, 23 was alleged to have killed a 300-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Idowu Christiana.

With all these killings, Nigerians are yet to see true public justice against all the suspects in various prisons, even as families continue to grief over their love ones. In all these, have we all learnt any lesson towards cautioning our wards and children against materialism and ill-gotten wealth?  This is a task for all.

Poverty, Bad Leadership And Drugs Are Major Factors, As Love now based on Money-Experts

Commenting on  serial killings of young ladies in the country and the way forward to tackle it, is the former Assistant Director of the department of State Services, (DSS), Mr. Dennis Amachree, who said that, the situation could be curtail through strategic government efforts by providing better economic policies and providing job opportunities for the young ones, as he traced the root cause to the burden of hardship and hopelessness. His words.

To mitigate the threat of young girls being killed by their supposed boyfriends, the government needs to address the root causes of the threats. The biting economic situation is the main culprit and should be reversed. Second, boyfriend/girlfriend relationships are becoming more pecuniary, with the burden placed on the man to either satisfy his girlfriend financially or show the society that he has made it, in the midst of general penury. A young man cannot get married without a job or money. There is no more natural attraction by love. Everything depends on how much money a man has.

The economy has to be fixed for the general public to live a normal life. Unemployment must be tackled to keep our youth population busy. Witch doctors who encourage human sacrifices must tracked and arrested. Our society needs urgent reorientation at this time. With an honest and conscious effort, involving an “All of Society Approach” we can ameliorate this problem. But then, that’s a tall order. Unfortunately, some use their girlfriends, relatives, and even parents for sacrifice to make stupendous money.

It’s a high risk to date someone without background check-Dr. Nzeribe Okegbue

On his part, a seasoned security expert, and Managing Director/Chief Executive officer, Combatant Guards Limited, Lagos , Chief (Dr) Nzeribe Okegbue JP, has warn ladies to be more cautious about who they go into any relationship with, stating that, cases of murder of ladies is as a result of lack of background check from the ladies. His words.

It is very unfortunate that the killing of young ladies by their male friends has become very rampant in our society. Reasons could be as a result of: The desire to get rich quick by young men in our society makes them want to do anything to make money, which includes money ritual. The desire of some of our young ladies to date rich men and live large makes them not care to know the man’s source of wealth.

High rate of moral decadence in the society makes people sing praises of sudden millionaires and billionaires without caring to know their source of wealth. Sometimes, they are conferred with traditional titles by traditional rulers and made to sit in high places in worship centers by religious leaders.

High level of morale decadence in the family makes parents not to ask questions when their child/children, without a known legitimate source of income start living a flamboyant lifestyle and riding exotic vehicles.

It is a security risk for a young lady to enter into serious relationship with a man without background check of the individual.

A young lady getting into serious relationship with any man should first know the man’s full names, residential address,  where he works,  some of the man’s family members etc. A man who knows the lady’s family has his full details will be careful of messing up with the lady.

Young ladies must always make their movements known by family members or friends. The young ladies should always let their male friends to know that their family know their whereabouts and if possible, the lady can make a family member or friend to say hello to the man through phone. It’s a security measure.

Drug Is A Major Cause-Modebelu

Obiageli Modebelu, an Associate Professor, who is the Head of Department Education, Distance Learning Institute (DLI), University of Lagos, has traced another root cause of serial killings of young ladies. This is even as she wants ladies to make their relationship known between families. Her views:

The state of killing young girls in the country by their boyfriends can be linked to drugs. The amount of drugs circulating in our society is alarming and the young people are getting addicted to it. Most of these drugs made available in our society today are the type of drugs refer to as Hallucinogens’. Hallucinogens make people to hallucinate just as the name implies. When one hallucinates, it distorts reality. Meaning that, when one is hallucinating, he or she sees human beings as cows or goats. Anyone in this influence can kill without understanding the consequences of his action. Now, the first thing the government can  do is to tighten the areas to which these drugs enter the country and then do serious cleansing not minding whose ox is gored.

Young girls should stop looking for golden fish or things they didn’t keep. Before you enter into any relationship, as a young person, you should be able to look before you leap. In fact, get to know each other’s family. Nothing prevents you to get to know your boyfriend’s mother, father, siblings and others. If you listen to the sister of that girl (Salome) that was murdered, none of them knew Oluwatimileyin, the killer. It’s red flag.

When your family members don’t know who you are having relationship with, it’s a red flag. So, the ladies should stop jumping into relationships without first getting to know that person very well.  So, parents have a lot of work to do, including young people also. It is not Government Issue alone, it is for all of us. Everybody must work against it, everybody must speak out because the rate of drug circulating in our country is the cause.

Insatiable nature of girls have put them in sorry state-Evangelist Ojakovo

Airing his views on the ugly situation, is Evangelist Samson Ojakovo, President, Sam Ojakovo foundation. In his reactions, he said:

Some of these killings are emanating from the insatiable nature of some of our young girls.

Most of these ritualistic activities are carried out for so many reasons. Majority of these young boyfriend’s became involved in occultic, armed robbery or kidnapping activities just to keep up with the insatiable demands of their girlfriend.

All what these set of girls desire is affluence and pleasure such that they don’t care what their boyfriends pass through or does to make money available. It then gets to a point where these young boys will start having nightmares and discomfort and in the process, they kill these girls for putting so much pressure on then to get involved in evil acts.

Another reason is jealousy arising from double dating. Because of the lust for recognition and affluence, these young ladies do not keep a single relationship. And whenever, a particular boyfriend finds out, the next step is to eliminate the girl especially if one of the boyfriend is an occult member.

Drugs and alcohol is another kettle of fish entirely. There is always that possibility that whoever takes drugs /alcohol, may one day lose his or her conscience and he or she will become uncontrollable. Funnily enough, the Bible emphasized these in Proverbs 20:1 and Habakkuk 2:15-16.

Some of these boys who are armed robbers, ritualists and kidnappers, their girlfriends may not be aware of the evil they do. And whenever they found out, they are killed so their secret will not be exposed especially the one that is threatening to expose him.

They could also be killed by their boyfriend as a respond to a command from their occultic heads or capon or Master just to display their loyalty and to prove that love will not stop them from carrying out any deadly attack or as a prove of their loyalty that love will not make them to jeopardize the secrecy of their occultic activities.

Finally, some are killed for ritual because there is the request from the juju priest to kill whoever they love most. In most cases, it is their girlfriends.

There is also the possibility that the girlfriend accidentally discovered what the boy is involved in and like I pointed out earlier, the girls are being eliminated to clean all traces.

Some do it to raise money through organ sales. This is the reason I do not support organ donation, sales of organ or organ transplant except liver or blood donation. One can donate a part of his or her liver because it will grow back successfully while still keeping the donor and the recipient alive and healthy. This also apply to blood. But for heart kidney etc, I do not support.
