Prominent public affairs commentator and analyst, Olufemi Ibine, has applauded President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for out-rightly dissolving the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State over lack of due process used to select the sacked Vice Chancellor , Prof. Bernard Udoh and others.
Recall that on October 29, Prof. Udoh was announced as the seventh substantive vice Chancellor of the university, even as factions kicked against it alleging foul play. This led to the nullification of the appointed officers of the University after due diligence and findings from the Federal ministry of education on November 1, who in their investigations said they uncovered substantial evidence of malpractice and undue process, therefore, it became obvious to protect the institution’s integrity.
In a statement released during the week, Ibine expressed strong support for Mr. President’s decision , describing it as a bold step towards addressing the alleged irregularities surrounding the appointments within the institution, pin pointing accountability and transparency is needed for development:
“The dissolution of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and the removal of its Vice-Chancellor and other implicated officials underscore President Tinubu’s dedication to fostering integrity in our educational system,” Ibine stated. “This action sends a clear message that illegal appointments and disregard for due process will not be tolerated.”
Ibine further urged the Federal Government to remain resolute in implementing reforms across other public institutions plagued by similar issues. “The rot in our universities has undermined the quality of education for far too long,” he said. “We must support efforts to clean up these systems to ensure that meritocracy, fairness, and accountability are upheld.”
This latest development has sparked a national conversation on the state of Nigeria’s educational system, with many stakeholders calling for further scrutiny of appointment processes and governance structures across public institutions.
As Nigerians await the appointment of a new Governing Council and Vice-Chancellor, Ibine encouraged the government to prioritize individuals with proven track records of excellence and integrity. He also called on the university community to embrace the changes and work collectively toward rebuilding the institution’s reputation.
The decision by President Tinubu marks yet another significant milestone in his administration’s reform agenda, which has placed a strong emphasis on addressing corruption and inefficiencies in public institutions.
