One of the very prominent members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), (Name withheld) has said that, the removal of the former Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa remains illegal.
He started this yesterday when our editor made enquires on the possibility of the former speaker returning. In his response, he said, Obasa will be restated ,and the president is aware. Condemning what he described as lawmakers rascality, he said: “How can they impeach a speaker in his absence owing to the facts that previous impeached speakers were present. Asked if those 32 lawmakers that impeached Obasa on January 13, will not return to the House come 2027, he said, “no, they will not.”
While speaking further, the respected elder statesman reiterated that some members of the GAC selected themselves to see Mr. president, for what they know to be illegal on the removal of Obasa and he felt he cannot go for such visit, and boasted that the impeached speaker will be restated.
Recall that Senator Anthony Adefuye and Senator Musiliu Obanikoro had trended last week when Adefuye faulted the process of removing the speaker while Obanikoro was supporting the process. Few days after, another GAC member, Chief Muraina Taiwo also corroborated Adefuye’s outburst and call for Obasa’s restatement.
Recall that Obasa had organized a press conference at the Speaker’s lodge, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos where he addressed huge crowd of his supporters, and used the medium to defend himself over various allegations levelled against him, in fact, he said : “I am not disturbed, I am not afraid.”
Obasa had refuted the claim, that he purchase vehicles each for lawmakers worth ₦1 billion, saying it is unrealistic. The former Speaker insisted that the allegations were attempts to discredit his leadership and integrity, emphasizing his long-standing commitment to legislative duties and service to Lagos State.
“Is it possible to construct an ordinary gate with N16 billion? It is not the wall of Jericho or the wall that demarcated the United States of America and Mexico.
“How can they say we bought one Hilux bus for N1 billion each and that we bought 40 pieces for N40 billion? Talking about thanksgiving, they should compare the one they said we spent N200 million and the one organized by the state government.
“I am not disturbed or perturbed, and I am not afraid. I will debunk all the allegations leveled against me by the House.
“I have not done anything wrong. I have been a lawmaker for over two decades, and I am the longest-serving lawmaker in the House.
“For me, I am not disturbed, perturbed, or afraid. I will address these allegations head-on and prove my innocence,” he said.
Responding to questions from newsmen shortly after he addressed his supporters, Obasa insisted that he remained the Speaker.
“My status in the House? I believe strongly I am still the Speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it. “I’m a Muslim and I believe in fate. But let’s do it the way it should be done.”
