How can someone console Elder Pastor Shyngle Wigwe, a man of 89 years old, who by God’s grace will be marking 90 years on earth by October this year. What kind of words can one use to console him and his wife, and the entire family- that one of his greatest, Herbert, wife, Doreen, and grandson, Chizi, just perished in a twinkle of eye in a plane crash at a foreign land.  He won’t even cite his eyes on the corpses of his perished family to pay them last respect. What a tragedy of life.

Late Dr.Herbert Wigwe

Herbert Wigwe’s death is a tragic end that no one will wish his or her enemy. For a father, son and wife to die in a plane crash, it is a mysterious end, but whether we like it or not, everyone has his or her own end, we only do pray for a glorious end.

When the news filtered the air and social media that a chopper transporting the CEO of Access Bank and Access Holdings, Herbert Wigwe, and about five others aboard crashed in California, United States, it was like a movie storyline telling. The next line of action was a statement from United States Federal Aviation (FAA), San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, on Saturday morning, confirming the crash, stating however that they were informed of a downed aircraft at approximately 10:12 p.m., on February 9, 2024. The scene of the crash was determined to be east of the 15-Freeway, near Halloran Springs Road. The chopper was identified as a Eurocopter EC 130, heading towards Las Vegas when it crashed last Friday night near Nipton, between Nevada and California. Later, FAA on Sunday, revealed that one of the causes of the chopper’s crash was based on wintry weather condition.

At this point I had wanted to call Elder Wigwe, or send him a message of consolation but I exercised caution and restrain until the news rain and wet everywhere.

Fortunately, I got to know Elder Pastor Shyngle Wigwe, a retired Director-General, Nigerian Television Authority, (NTA) four years ago. Since then, he took me like a son. He even invited me to his residence in Chevron, Lekki, Lagos in some occasions, and even said, ‘’Don’t hesitate to ask me for any assistance if necessary” Yes, a great vacuum has been created in Wigwe’s dynasty, but the consolation is the good name Herbert sustained till the very end, became a role model, and mentor to thousands of people around the world. It’s sad that death smiled at Herbert and his wife and son at a disgusted manner, all they did was smile back as helpless beings.

We must begin to understand the importance of our existence that our final destination is not here on earth even as immortality is the ultimate price. So, it is good to remember,  we are all dead men, living as robots, and it beholds the owner of life to help us realize the number of our days so that, we can prepare ourselves towards meeting the end. That, give us confident of our departure anytime anywhere in eternity.

Secondly, the moment we begin to realize that we are all dead men, the quicker for life adjustment, and begin to live according to the purpose and will of life-promoting the good, giving succor to the downtrodden, uplifting the fallen and living in peace with all men.

At this point, it is not time for the family of Wigwe to grief but it is time to increase their faith in God alone, and always remember, as it was said in the great movie gladiator:  Ultimately, we’re all dead men. Sadly, we cannot choose how, but we can decide how we meet that end in order that we are remembered as men”  Dr. Herbert Wigwe will be remembered as one who brought salvation to Access bank and made it enviable. He would be remembered for lifting the fallen, the weak, and gave his life of service to humanity and God.
