Port Harcourt-Efforts by the Pan Niger Delta Elders forum, PANDEF led peace committee in Rivers state has suffered a set back as lawmakers loyal to the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike, refused to suspend their plan impeachment action against the governor. This is even as the crisis in the State keep worsening as 26 lawmakers continue their political push to remove Sir Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. Report says, rather than the Lawmakers pay attention and honour the peace talk, they snub the Committee.
Recall that last week PANDEF had set up 7-member high-level peace committee, led by the respected elder statesman , Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, a former Attorney General of the federation. The committee arrived Port Harcourt in bid to meeting with various erring factions and elders to find lasting political solutions to the dispute. While the committee met with various elder groups, the lawmakers—led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule—reportedly refused to pick up their calls or meet with them.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed report had it that the Assembly may likely convene on January 27, 2026, as fear cluster the air that the fiery lawmakers may begin impeachment process on their return to legislative activities, having officially written to the state Chief Judge to set up a panel to investigate the Governor for “gross misconduct.
Even with the incessant push by the lawmakers, the Governor seems safe as undisclosed source says, the Chief Judge is unlikely to set up the investigation panel because of an existing court order, except a higher court vacate the order.
Last week, Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt barred the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, from receiving or acting on any correspondence from the Rivers State House of Assembly relating to moves to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu. As the drama unfold, Rivers people and Nigerians await the next episode.
