DELTA-The Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has said that President Muhammadu Buhari’s led government is committed to ending estimated electricity power supply billing across the country. He noted this on Saturday at Orogun in Ughelli North Local government area of Delta State during a ground ceremony of a power Sub-station, which will serve Orogun Federal Polytechnic and the area. Omo-Agege who represents Delta Central, attributed the development to the purposeful leadership of All Progressive Congress, charging the people to continue to support the president, and also encouraged the construction company of the project, Niger Delta Power Holding and National Integrated Power project to ensure efficiency and effectiveness in the whole process.
Meanwhile, in his earlier address, the senator had reminded BEDC to comply with 100 percent of FG directive to meter all residence across the country and desist for estimated billing. “I remind the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) of its obligation to customers and the government regarding the mass metering initiative of the Federal Government aimed at ending the era of estimated billing syndrome. “That is what President Muhammadu Buhari and members of the National Assembly want. All over the world, you pay for the energy you consumed. The only obligation government has is to provide the enabling environment for it to be made available,”
NAN had however quoted the Senator saying that Federal Government is ready to addressing energy poverty in the country through mass metering. Stressing that the establishment of the power sub-station was one of the several initiatives of President Buhari’s administration to make electricity available to Nigerians, describing energy as a backbone for the economic and social transformation of any nation, which in a large scale brings about increase in productivity and expansion of industries strength.
Commenting on the benefit of the project, the Delta Central Senator noted that there is no doubt of the projection of the power station in the area, especially with the establishment of a Federal Polytechnic in Orogun. “President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is currently making significant effect aimed at reducing energy poverty that has over the years impacted negatively on the economic development and public health. “The objective has been to ensure that the number of people who used modern energy should increase to reduce social cost than to increase social benefits”
“The establishment of this power sub-station is one of the several initiative of this administration aimed at addressing the energy poverty in our nation. “Earlier, we have leverage on the vision of this administration in the power sector to provide transformers to several communities in our Senatorial District to improve the energy availability and supply to our people. We have already provided Solar-power street lights across most communities in Delta Central Senatorial District. “We are looking forward to doing more when the implementation of the 2021 budget begins,”
On his part, Mr Chiedu Ugbo, the Managing Director, Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), assured that the power station would assist to regulate the power voltage. “The station has the capability to regulate its voltage to the normal level and would also create employment for the teaming youths of this community”
Also, the President-General of Orogun Kingdom, Chief (Barr) Benson Ndakara, represented by Mr. Godspower Odenema, expressed warm expression to FG for the initiative and Senator Omo-Agege for bring glory to the kingdom.
