“Check the background of the boys they intend to date Know their means of livelihood, confide in people when they are going to visit their boy friends with details and the boys address and phone numbers,  introduce the boy to her family and seek consent before dating him, and learn some act of defence. The most important is to seek the face of God first because the days are evil Girls/Ladies should avoid ungodly/unholy or unrighteous relationships”

A former Commissioner of Education, Delta State, Dr. Veronica Ogbuagu, has said that the serial killings of young girls by their boyfriends for ritual benefits may not necessarily be as a result of poverty but lack of parental guidance  and lost of family morals. The Ex-Commissioner, known for no sense in her time during the administration of former Governor James Ibori, also put the blame on wrong socialization and bad syndicates.

Ogbuagu was responding to the Afrikanwatch publication during the week on Serial killings: Many ladies, gone… where she provided the way forward even as she traced the root causes. Her words:

“The agents of socialization have failed: parental failure, schools and religious bodies have failed; environmental factors and influences, the media and Western influences; devilish indoctrination”

“Even in richer families and countries, similar crimes and incidents are happening: today and tomorrow’s people seem to have wrongly gone astray – where we’re heading, no one knows!”

Just because most families, communities and societies have near total failure, there’s need to  restart and re-birth of ours or various cultures: re-orientation; need to re-evaluate our norms and values; re- prioritize families and societal set goals.

“In a discuss like this, many would be hastily tempted to say ‘poverty’ is the bane and cause of where we’re finding ourselves today – this is not true. Here in Nigeria, our youths and elders have been so brainwashed into believing anything: we don’t seem to have minds of our own anymore!”

“I don’t ever seem to get it with a society that would be rewarding immorality like the so-called Big Brother Nigeria winners, whereas, Best graduating students go home with nothing – is that not of the mind?”

“There’s a need for a conscious and drastic efforts to halt the drift!  For instance, Nigeria needs a total overhaul of policy changes, religious houses need to reset their agendas and goals, brains of most elders and communities need to be reset – they need to be truthful and teach their offsprings the truth as it is; they need to have leadership and respect their leaders; know and follow their destiny. Families should be stern and firm: there’s need to go back to our customs and traditions.”

“Parents should deemphasize Westernization and Western culture and influences. Belief system should be encouraged to also curb the drift. Parents, families, communities, societies and all agents of socializations or social changes must be regigged, rebranded, redirected and reorientated. Check the background of the boys they intend to date Know their means of livelihood, confide in people when they are going to visit their boy friends with details and the boys address and phone numbers,  introduce the boy to her family and seek consent before dating him, and learn some act of defence.
