We also wish to remind all military personnel that it is treasonable to even contemplate this illegality. “The full wrath of the law will be brought to bear on any personnel found to collude with people having such agenda”-Military

ABUJA-The Nigerian Military has reassured Nigerians of its commitment to democratic rule, stating that, no amount of pressure or utterances will make them act out of the Country’s 1999 Constitution but will continue to preserve the sovereignty and remain loyal to President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. This was made know yesterday by The Defence Headquarters through Brig. General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Acting Director, Defence Information. He said, it has become necessary to make it known that the Military High Command is aware of the call by an elder statesman, Robert Clark, SAN while on Channels TV, (Politics Today), that President Buhari should hand over power to the military for the purpose of restructuring and repositioning of the country’s situation, that the military totally distance herself from such undemocratic view. The statement reads:
“The Nigerian Military wish to dissociate itself from such anti-democratic utterance and position. “Let it be stated categorically that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to the present Administration and all associated democratic institutions. “We shall continue to remain apolitical, subordinate to the Civil Authority, firmly loyal to the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari and the 1999 Constitution as Amended. “We shall continue to discharge our constitutional responsibilities professionally, especially in protecting the country’s democracy, defence of the territorial integrity of the country as well as protection of lives and properties of citizens”
Nwachukwu however warm seriously that the military will not tolerate any form of saboteur or illegal act of any personnel. “We also wish to remind all military personnel that it is treasonable to even contemplate this illegality. “The full wrath of the law will be brought to bear on any personnel found to collude with people having such agenda”
“The current security challenges are not insurmountable as the military, in partnership with other security agencies are working assiduously to ameliorate the challenge. “Nigeria will know peace again,” he added.
However, with what is happening in the country, ranging from killings, raping, kidnapping by Fulani herdsmen and other dangerous crimes daily, some political and social commentators had warned that if proper measures are not taken, there might be coup while others were of the views that, the era of such is gone. Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto Archdiocese had noted in his Christmas message last year that, if it were to be a Christian that is holding power with the things happening now, a coup will have emerged, with a reason of tagging the government blind eye. Parts of Bishop Kukah’s sermon:
“This government owes the nation an explanation as to where it is headed as we seem to journey into darkness. The spilling of this blood must be related to a more sinister plot that is beyond our comprehension. Are we going to remain hogtied by these evil men or are they gradually becoming part of a larger plot to seal the fate of our country? “President Buhari deliberately sacrificed the dreams of those who voted for him to what seemed like a programme to stratify and institutionalise northern hegemony by reducing others in public life to second class status. He has pursued this self-defeating and alienating policy at the expense of greater national cohesion. Every honest Nigerian knows that there is no way any non-Northern Muslim President could have done a fraction of what President Buhari has done by his nepotism and gotten away with it. There would have been a military coup a long time ago or we would have been at war. The President may have concluded that Christians will do nothing and will live with these actions. He may be right and we Christians cannot feel sorry that we have no pool of violence to draw from or threaten our country. However, God does not sleep. We can see from the inexplicable dilemma of his North”
