ABUJA-The Nigerian Defence Headquarters, has released a press statement, debunking what it tagged as social media propaganda  against a serving military officer,  Brig. General MS Adamu over an allegation of involvement in the detention of Seaman Abba Huruna nearly six years now.

This is even coming as the Chairman, House Committee on Navy, Hon.  Yusuf Gagdi,

Representing Pankshin, Kanke and Kanam federal constituency, Plateau state said  on Monday, that Huruna has been in detention close to six years, therefore, the House must get to the root of the matter, and whosoever is involved in the illegal detention will pay the price. He further explained:

“The ordeal of Seaman Abbas, as narrated by his wife, Hussaina Iliyasu, on ‘Berekete’, a Human Rights Television programme, began in 2018 when he was assigned to a joint operation in Sarti Baruwa, Taraba State, under the command of Brigadier MS Adamu. However, a misunderstanding arose between them, leading to his detention in inhumane conditions for several years without a proper trial, as required by the Armed Forces Act 2004, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria.”

“The inhumane treatment inflicted on the naval personnel over a minor disagreement with his superior army officer moved many in the studio to tears as the wife recounted her husband’s ordeal. The cruelty exhibited by Brigadier General MS Adamu towards his subordinate has drawn widespread condemnation from millions of Nigerians who have heard the story.”

“The heartbreaking account of Seaman Abbas Haruna aired on ‘Berekete’, has prompted the House of Representatives Committee on Navy to intervene to uncover the truth, preserve the integrity of our military, and safeguard the rights of every individual under the laws of the land.”

“Furthermore, there is a need to identify all officers involved and engage with the military hierarchy to ensure that anyone responsible for the gross violation of Seaman Abbas’ rights is held accountable.”

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters press statement titled: Re: Brigadier General Ms. Adamu’s Pictures and Connection with Seaman Abbas  Haruna’s Case, signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director, Defence information, sited in their X, read:

“The Social media has been awashed with the pictures of a serving senior office Brigadier General MS Adamu alleged to be connected to the  case of Seaman Abbas Haruna for the records, Brigadier General MS Adamu, whose pictures are being used is in no way connected to the case of Seaman Abbas”.

“The Defence Headquarters wishes to seize this opportunity to call on the general public to allow the committee set up by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa to conclude it’s findings without prejudice to public opinion . Defence Headquarters appeal to the public to restrain from comments that are particularly false and capable of infringing on the fundamental human rights and privacy of the senior officer.
