The Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri has eulogized, Chief Diepriye Alamieyeseigha, a former Governor of the state who died at the age of 63 in 2015. Diri while speaking on the legacies of the former, stated that his roles towards the development of the state after six years of his death cannot be quantified.  Stressing however that remembering his predecessor’s legacy is paramount to history.

Late Alamieyeseigha

The governor disclosed this at the 6th memorial anniversary of the late politician at Amassoma in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state earlier today, pin pointing that Alamieyeseigha was a visionary leader, who brought about the idea of establishing the Niger Delta University (NDU) to the state, thereby bridging the gap of manpower development.  He was loved by all as he was called the Governor-General of Ijaw Nation, because of his push for resource control by oil producing states.  Diri advised politicians in the state not to toll the part of politics of bitterness and division as it depicts development.

“We came again to remember him on the six years that this man walked on earth. He saw, conquered and left us. “Chief Alamieyeseigha contributed to the growth and development of Bayelsa. That is why we will continue to celebrate him as a government and as a people.  “Alamieyeseigha was a visionary leader. That was why he established NDU that now addresses the manpower development challenge of Bayelsa State. If you go to our ministries today and even the private sector, you will discover that most of the employees are products of NDU. He is no longer physically present but his works will continue to speak for him.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Akpoebidei Alamieyeseigha, expressed appreciation to Governor Diri for fulfilling his promise that the state would take over the planning of the annual memorial anniversary celebration of the late governor. The high point of the celebration was the unveiling of the statue and laying of wreath at the tomb of the deceased by Diri.  It could be recalled that Alamieyeseigha died on October 10, 2015 at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, where he had been in coma for days. He was the governor of the Niger Delta state from 1999 to 2005 when he was impeached and removed from office on corruption charges, as his deputy then, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in  as the governor. Jonathan later became Nigerian president.
