Amb. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, a Nigerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has been elected as the President of the 74th UN General Assembly. Afrikanwatch reliably gathered that Muhammad-Bande, is the sole candidate for the position, therefore, elected through acclamation at the 87th plenary meeting of the Assembly in New York, today, Tuesday.
Interestingly, Bande is now, the
second Nigerian to hold such office after Joseph Garba, a retired military
officer, who was also a diplomat that led the organ between 1989 and 1990. He
will be sworn-in, September, 2019.
